Silver City Community Garden: Renate Victor is the point of contact for participating in this community project to increase local, fresh produce and to learn more about gardening.

Photo Display of Volunteers on Silver City School House Archaeology Site: Very young children to older adults worked cheerfully side by side on this long project, many of them from Silver City, but many were also good Samaritans from the region who just wanted to help and be involved in an archaeology project.

A photo display highlighting the volunteers will be displayed at the School House through the June town advisory board meeting. Special thanks to display organizer Dr. Ron Reno and Mona Reno. The display was funded, in part, by Silver City Task Force and Healthy Communities Coalition

Chautauqua Performance of Photographer Margaret Bourke-White by Dr. Doris Dwyer: Friday, May 28 at 6:30pm, Silver City School House: Scholar Doris Dwyer will portray the famous photographer, Margaret Bourke-White. Bourke-White married novelist Erskine Caldwell in Silver City in 1939 when the couple toured Nevada. The event is free and includes light refreshments. The recommended audience is teens and adults. This program is made possible by Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and NV Energy. This program is organized and sponsored by Silver City Task Force and Volunteer Library, and funded, in party, by local used book sales and Healthy Communities Coalition. Plein Air Painting Demonstration, June 25: Artist Jean Legassick has volunteered to demonstrate plein air painting in the Silver City on Friday, June 25 at 9am. En plein air is a French expression used to describe the act of painting outdoors. This event is recommended for children age 10 and up and their parents (please stay with your child during this event to help chaperone). Call Quest Lakes for more information: 847-0742.

Children’s Art Classes Using Recycled and Found Objects, Summer: Artist Heather Patterson will teach a series of free children’s art classes for ages 6 to 12 this summer in Silver City on:
Tuesday, July 6: 11am-1pm
Monday, July 12: 11am-1pm
Tuesday, July 20: 11am-1pm
Monday, July 26: 11am-1pm

Classes for Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers, Parents, Grandparents, etc.: classes will be offered during the evening this summer on early childhood education and child development. Classes will be taught by experts from Cooperative Extension, Children’s Cabinet, etc. These classes are open to any adult. Contact Quest Lakes at 847-0742 for more information.

Class One: Fun with Science is a hands on class approved by the Nevada Registry for child care providers, preschool and elementary teachers, parents and grandparents. It will be held at the Silver City School House Community Center on Thursday, June 17 at 6:30pm. Participants will take part in about 10 activities, learning how to lead science experiments that result in Baggie Ice Cream, Kool-Aid Playdough, and “flubber.” This class by Children’s Cabinet professionals is being hosted by the Silver City Task Force at the Silver City School House Community Center. Class Two: Creative Arts and NV Pre-K Standards for teachers, parents, babysitters, (age 16 and up) July 15: Tina Springmeyer, Pre-K Standards Coordinator for Nevada, will teach a fun class on Creative Arts and Nevada Pre-K Standards, including 2 early childhood hours credits, on Thurs July 15 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Silver City School House Community Center. The class will include hands-on projects to teach preschool, kindergarten, early childhood and afterschool program teachers ideas for enhancing art, dance and music in their classrooms. Parents, grandparents and guardians are also welcome. Projects will include painting, woodworking, etc, so please dress comfortably and casually. Call Quest Lakes to register: 847-0742.

Shakespeare at Sand Harbor Followed by Picnic and Swimming: July 22 at 10amThe D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program is a collaboration between the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and Nevada Shakespeare Company. It is presented FREE for kids and their chaperones. In 2010, we will offer one of Shakespeare's greatest plays, The Tempest. The sorcerer and one-time Duke of Milan, Prospero, and his daughter, Miranda, have been trapped on a tropical island for 12 years. Their only companions are a Monster called Caliban, son of the Witch, who used to rule the Island and Ariel, a spirit loyal and known only to Prospero. As fate would have it, those who betrayed Prospero are brought within the reaches of his powers. His enemies find themselves at the mercy of a great storm and are cast upon the Island. With Magical Spirits, Monsters and Pirates, the Young Shakespeare production of The Tempest promises to be a fun, interactive show for the entire family
