Silver City Revitalization 1965 to 2010

Silver City today is an Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center where many artists, writers, musicians, and artisans have home studios and workshops. The town also has an arts group, a resident artist program, and a summer arts and science program, all offering free, public programming.
Since 2003, the town has had an annual free science and arts summer program for area children.

Art and Writing Workshops in Silver City with Award-Winning Artist Scott MacLeod
Silver City, Nevada - Scott MacLeod of Oakland, California will lead art and writing projects in March and April at the Silver City School House/Community Center. The free art and writing projects are sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, with additional support from Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties. Community Group Art Project: Scott will lead a collaborative group art project to build a ship model from found objects on Wednesdays this spring. The workshops will begin on Wednesday March 23 and continue each Wednesday in March and April including March 23 and March 30, and April 6, 13, 20, and 27. Scott invites people to join him at the school house, explaining that "we'll collaboratively build a found-object model of a sailing ship. Using driftwood, brass bits, rusted iron, fishing poles, wire, salvaged wood from old houses, and many more types of found objects, I've previously made two unique sailing ship models/sculptures, and I'd like to make a third one with interested members of the local community. When we get done with it, the community can keep it and decide where it should live. We've got six weeks to get this built, so let's get cracking!" Finding a Form for Your Life Story: On Monday, March 28th from 10am-noon, Scott will offer a reading from his own memoir in progress, followed by a general discussion about finding a way to tell one's own life story. Gatherings will continue on Mondays in March and April (Monday March 28 and April 4, 11, 18 and 25). Scott explains that "in 1990, soon after the Berlin Wall came down, I self-produced a performance art tour of Eastern Europe and Moscow, making 13 unique performances over the course of four months in Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland, Russia and other countries. In many places, I was the first American they'd seen in 20 or more years. This ground-level, "Do It Yourself" trip was difficult and also the best thing I ever did for myself; it changed my life and the lives of many others. I'm here in Silver City trying to find the final written form for volumes of journals and other writing I've done over the years. I think a casual workshop to discuss how one settles on a form for one's own stories would be useful for me, and hopefully for some of the local community. Come join me for weekly discussion and readings."
Scott MacLeod has been presenting live, time-based, conceptual and static work in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally since 1979.
His installations and paintings have been widely exhibited in the Bay Area at venues including Southern Exposure, The Lab, George Lawson Gallery, and SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) as well as internationally in the Czech Republic, Belgium, England, Italy and Germany. Visual arts awards include the San Francisco Art Institute’s Adaline Kent Award and a Wallace Alexander Gerbode Visual Arts Award.
His fiction, poetry, theater and critical writings have been widely published in the USA and abroad, and he has co-produced several international cultural exchange projects between USA, France, Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia.
His work is archived at the Avant Writing Collection of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of Ohio State University, Columbus and the Experimental Writing Collection of University at Buffalo, New York, and is collected by The Contemporary Museum, Hawai’I, The Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, and many private collectors.

Tell Me About Silver City, Nevada
Silver City, Nevada - Although today Silver City is often mischaracterized as a ghost town, it's actually a thriving little village with a rich tradition of public music and art events, as well as activities for locals. Home to an unusual number of well-known artists, musicians, writers and academics, Silver City's historic buildings and sites attract plein air painters and photographers from both near and far.
