July 10th Community Potluck and Meet & Greet with Visiting Artist/Writer

Come one, come all to a potluck community dinner on Friday, July 10th, 2015 at 6:00 pm at the Silver City School House.Bring whatever you can; we will eat whatever shows up!

The dinner provides an opportunity for a casual get together with neighbors, as well as a chance to meet Brian Schorn, visiting artist in the new Resident Artist Program in Silver City. Brian is an artist, musician and poet who will offer local free workshops for adults and teens at the Silver City School House, and assistance with designing the Silver City Arts July 18th exhibit. Below is a schedule of the classes and a bit more about Brian.

Schedule: No special skills or experience required. All classes will be held at the Silver City School House:

*Surrealist Art Techniques, Tuesday July 14th from 10am - noon.

*Poetry Reading and the Creative Writing Exercises, Tuesday July 21st from 10am-noon.

*Sound Ecology Workshop, Including Listening Exercises and Sound Mapping, Tuesday July 28th from 10am - noon (please wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring sun screen, etc. as this workshop will include some walking).


Summer Visiting Artist: Brian Schorn, a multi-talented artist, writer, musician, graphic designer and photographer, will be offering free, public programming in Silver City this summer. Schorn's music has been performed in France, Austria, New York, and Oakland, and his visual art has been exhibited and published widely for the last twenty years in numerous solo exhibitions. His creative writing has been published in many books, journals and anthologies, and he was awarded the Academy of American Poets Prize. Hand-made poetry books by Schorn can be found in the Marvin Sackner Collection of Concrete and Visual Poetry. He has taught art, graphic design and creative writing, including at the University of Michigan, Brown University and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Schorn will also be lending his considerable experience to preparing and designing a July 18th fine arts exhibit sponsored by the Silver City Arts group. Schorn has hung the work of many well-known artists in various capacities as a gallery and/or museum preparator, including work by artists such as Yoko Ono, Jean Dubuffet, Julian Schnabel, Duane Hansen, Jules Olitski, Martin Puyear, and Frank Stella. Schorn has also juried and curated university art exhibitions and art publications.

Brian invites folks to stop by the Resident Artist studio (on No-Name Road) to see his works of art in progress. He writes,"As I begin to get work moving along, I'd love to share it with anyone who is interested."

What is the Resident Artist Program in Silver City? A unique resident artist program has developed in Silver City, a productive small community on the Comstock which is located within one of the nation's largest federally designated historic landmarks. Those creating in the performing, visual, media, design, or literary arts are being invited to reside in town for periods of up to 4 months, in exchange for offering public performances, exhibitions, lessons, workshops, art work, etc. in the community.
