Silver City, Nevada - Silver City Arts group is hosting an unusual fine art show highlighting some of the artwork by others that Silver City residents own and treasure. The exhibition is a tribute to the love of art that thrives in the small community, and also a rare opportunity to see artwork from residents' private collections. The opening reception is on Saturday, July 18th from 10am -3pm at the Silver City School House at 385 High Street. The show, entitled "Fine Art From the Collections of Silver City Residents" is a free, public event with hors d'oeuvres and live music.
Art From Around the World: Silver City residents will share pieces they've collected by artists from Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America, including work by Walter McNamara, Estelle Peck Ishigo, Mick Sheldon, Joan Arrizabalaga, Bob Adams, Francisco de Goya, Nolan Preece, Ray Obermayr, Dick Peitz, Edw Martinez, Gus Bundy, Lucy Nieder, Mike Hess, Jim McCormick, Mimi Patrick, Jeff Nicholson, Karen Kreyeski, Jean LeGassick, Lorna Obermayr, Richard Bodner, Patty Marshall, Barbara Stein, Molly Allander, Susan Stornetta, John Hunt, Brian Schorn, Layman Jones, Jon Colin Roberts, Ron Victor, Sandra Bunkley, Wayne Thomas, Hazel Cerstvik, Ron Victor, Larry Wahrenbrock, Daniel Heath, and many others.
Rarely Seen Pieces: Each of the pieces selected for the show has an interesting history. For instance, an original water color by Estelle Peck Ishigo will be among the works on display. She is famous for documenting, through her art, her experiences in a Japanese internment camp in the U.S. during the World War II period. Her life in the camp and her art were the subject of Steven Okazaki's Academy Award-winning film "Days of Waiting." The painting on display in the Silver City exhibition dates from before Estelle's internment, and is from the collection of Carol Brown and Doug Beverly Brown of Silver City.
Exhibition Design: Brian Schorn, a visiting artist with the new Resident Artist Program in Silver City, will be lending his considerable experience to preparing and designing the exhibition and its unique grouping of diverse types of art. He's hung the work of many well known artists in various capacities as a gallery and/or museum preparator, including work by artists such as Yoko Ono, Jean Dubuffet, Julian Schnabel, Duane Hansen, Jules Olitski, Martin Puyear, and Frank Stella. Schorn has also juried and curated various local and university art exhibitions and art publications.
